As some of you may have read or somehow learnt, I do own a new laptop now. Well, actually it’s only used-new, but as good as new and still with warranty. Anyway, first thing I did: Put in the Fedora 8 Live-CD, booted, enjoyed. Almost everything worked out of the box. Exceptions were the graphics (ATI Mobility Radeon x1300) and the webcam, at least everything else I checked worked, including wireless (most important!) and the CPU-throttling, which cools the laptop quite down a lot. So, next logical step: Install Fedora. After doing so, I activated the additional repositories, livna, freshrpms and atrpms. Following the guidelines from this tutorial, I got almost my previous installation. Only one really bothering thing was still there: Graphics not working!
The laptop does have the already mentioned ATI Mobility x1300 graphics chipset and there is the proprietary fglrx driver for it. BUT: the version available until some time ago (7.12) did not support the native resolution of the screen, which is 1680×1050. I want that resolution, badly, that’s what I spent the money for! So, what are the alternatives? I don’t use the 3D-effects of the desktop, so any driver would be fine. That’s how I found out about the radeonhd driver. It’s a free, though yet incomplete driver for ATI graphic cards. At least, with it I got my 1680×1050 resolution. Too bad though, that it doesn’t allow me to use my webcam, at least it’s not working within skype and cheese but it worked when I used the fglrx driver for testing. Lately, a new version of that driver was released and it promises to fix my resolution problem. I will give it a try, as soon as it is in the livna-repo. And yes, I am too lazy to circumvent my package manager!
What would be the overall conclusion, regarding the Acer Travelmate 8204 and Fedora? Well, it is a pleasure. I barely, if ever reboot, as Suspend and Hibernate are working as well and I can say for sure, that this is the most productive and fastest laptop I’ve ever worked with. Well done, Acer! Not so well done, ATI!
Als erstes möchte ich den paar Lesern meines Blogs ein frohes neues Jahr wünschen! So Dinge passieren halt einfach so, wenn man mal längere Zeit nix schreibt… Aber die Warterei hat ja ein Ende, hier ist einiges passiert, ich berichte brav.
Fangen wir so… im Dezember an. Unsere letzten beiden Seminare endeten vor Weihnachten, seitdem haben wir keine Uni mehr. Dies bedeutet allerdings nicht, dass jetzt Langeweile herrscht… Nein, viel besser: Meine Freundin ist zu Besuch gekommen! Pünktlich zu Jahrestag, Weihnachten und Silvester. Ein Stückchen Heimat, fernab selbiger… Als erstes, größeres Event stand also an: Weihnachten, Hari Natal auf Indonesisch. Wir haben viel gefeiert, erst ein wenig mit der ganzen Uni-Truppe in Jimbaran, dann wurden wir abends von meiner Familie abgeholt, sind am nächsten Vormittag zu einer Bekannten nach Ubud gefahren, haben dort viel gegessen und gefeiert und am letzten Weihnachtstag haben wir ausgeschlafen! Musste auch mal sein, immerhin ist Weihnachten
Nach dem ganzen Weihnachtsstress mussten wir die ersten nicht-Regen-Tage nutzen. Wir haben uns ins Auto (mit Fahrer) gesetzt und sind drei Tage rund um Bali getourt. Erster Stop unserer Reise: Ubud. Dort durften wir freundlicherweise in der Villa von Marina und Yan Suryana übernachten. In Ubud selber haben wir all die typischen touristischen Sachen gemacht: Monkey Forest, Elefantenhöhle (Goa Gajah), Shopping, Kaffee trinken mit Blick auf Reisfelder, Legong & Barong Tanz am Abend. Ein durchgehend schöner Tag! Die Nacht haben wir trotz vieler fremder Geräusche (so ein Gecko hört sich schon lustig an, wenn er über das Mückennetz läuft) ganz gut überstanden.
Neuer Tag, neues Ziel. Der Tag war der 29.12.2007, das Ziel war Lovina im Norden Balis. Jedoch war unser eigentliches Ziel gar nicht mal die Stadt, sondern in erster Linie der Weg. Denn auf dem Weg nach Lovina wollten wir möglichst viel sehen. Und das hat auch ganz gut geklappt. Wir haben uns verschiedene Tempel angeschaut, einen Wasserfall, Bedugul, den Markt in Candikuning, den Wassertempel bei Bedugul. (Fotos folgen bald/irgendwann, aber das Internet ist gerade nicht schnell genug, als dass ich welche hochladen könnte.) Wir haben dann die Nacht in einem Hotel in Lovina, direkt am Strand verbracht. Natürlich erst, nachdem wir zu Abend gegessen haben. Lecker Pizza, erstaunlich gute sogar!
Der vorletzte Tag von 2007 war dann verplant mit der Rückfahrt nach Denpasar, auf der wir möglichst viele Sehenswürdigkeiten mitnehmen wollten: Die warmen Quellen (welche auf Indonesisch “Air Panas” heißen, was soviel bedeutet wie… heißes Wasser), den Muttertempel Pura Besakih und Gunung Kawin, das vermutlich älteste Steinmonument Balis. Leider hatte es Rike kalt erwischt, ihr ging es nicht so gut, weswegen wir das Programm auf die heißen Quellen und Besakih verkürzt haben. Gut, dass man noch jung und flexibel ist! Denn so war unsere Reise allen Widrigkeiten zum Trotze (gut, viele waren’s nicht…) schön!
Und schon war das Jahr zu Ende. 2007 lag in den letzten Zügen/am letzten Tag. Das heißt, neben vielen guten Vorsätzen auch: Silvester feiern! Genau das, also das Feiern, weniger die Vorsätze haben wir auch gemacht. Wir waren mit allen Leuten hier vom EOC zuerst gemeinsam Essen, anschließend ging es in den “My Room” in Kuta, wo wir in der dritten (Freiluft-)Etage ins neue Jahr “gerutscht” sind. Gut, dass wir ein Dach über’m Kopf hatten, denn es hat in Strömen geregnet! Feuerwerk war auch nicht viel zu sehen, vermutlich des Wetters wegen.
Das neue Jahr begann dann so, wie das alte aufgehört hat – mit viel Regen. Die nächsten Tage hat es durchgeregnet und alle unsere Reise- und Strandpläne lösten sich in verdammt feuchter Luft auf. Wir waren stattdessen viel Shoppen und oft essen. Hat halt alles auch was gutes. Aber auch die indonesische Regenzeit gönnt sich und uns mal eine Pause, und so haben wir jeden regenfreien Tag dazu genutzt, weitere Punkte der Urlaubs-ToDo-Liste abzuarbeiten. Insbesondere waren dies: Der Strand in Jimbaran, Pura Tanah Lot und Pura Ulu Watu. Und zwischendurch immer mal wieder ein wenig – Shopping! Wir haben die Zeit auf jeden Fall rumbekommen. Im Nachhinein eigentlich viel zu schnell, die drei Wochen Urlaub vergingen wie im Flug 
Aber es war insgesamt ein super Urlaub.
Ein kleiner Nebeneffekt von Rikes Erscheinen hier auf Bali ist, dass sie mir meinen neuen Laptop mitgebracht hat. Ein Acer Travelmate 8204. Sieht gut aus Als erstes direkt erstmal Fedora drauf installiert, und bis auf ein bekanntes Problem mit der Grafikkarte läuft alles einwandfrei. Die Webcam habe ich unter Linux noch nicht ausprobiert, aber ich mache mir Hoffnungen, dass sie funktioniert. Jetzt sitze ich also hier mit dem neuen Laptop und genieße eine höhere Bildschirmauflösung. Hätte ich jetzt noch schnelles Internet, würde ich vermutlich auch schon längst alle meine benötigten Programme nachinstalliert haben…
Inzwischen ist Rike wieder abgeflogen und auch gut wieder in Deutschland gelandet. Das Leben hier geht seinen ungeordneten Verlauf weiter. Morgen oder übermorgen werde ich nach Yogyakarta reisen um dort Katharina, Katharina und Verena wiederzutreffen. Von dort aus planen wir Borobudur und Prambanan zu besuchen. Vielleicht noch mehr, mal schauen, was sich so ergibt. Ein kleines Bisschen Kultur, sollte man ja auch nicht vernachlässigen. Später im Monat steht vielleicht auch noch Singapur an. Aber ich bin schon längst im Indonesischen Zeitmanagement drin und plane nie länger als eine Woche im Voraus. Hat Vorteile, hat Nachteile, funktioniert.
Yesterday I somehow managed to screw up my home partition. It was a cryptsetup-luks encrypted partition and it seems like I wrote over the beginning of the partition when updating grub, which I had to do due to some re-partitioning… Today was consequently mostly spent on fixing that mess. At home I usually keep a copy of the most current Fedora Rescue CD. Or several copies. Well – I am not at home. And the Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD does not support LVM… Quite a hazzle with a not-so-happy ending.
Anyway, my “new” /home is now bigger (who would not like that) and my last backup is luckily less than two weeks old. Rdiff-backup is doing its thing and restoring (almost) all data.
Lessons learned:
Next time, I just won’t resize but delete stuff instead…
* somehow one directory within my ~/.evolution can not be restored. rdiff-backup hangs at 100% cpu and seems to do nothing on that 4 MB directory with ~20 files in it. I didn’t find anything on that, but if anyone knows something…
Yesterday Evening I had an idea.
Inspired by the changing background in Fedora 8 (which rocks, by the way!!!), I had the idea about some “mood-applet” for GNOME (or any desktop, for that matter). What’s the idea?
Well, think of it as a global setting applet, where you can somehow “change” your mood, kind of like you do with the volume of your speakers. Depending on the mood, the desktop could change its appearance, the music selection could be influenced, your instant messenger will change your status, maybe something else?
It’s just an idea and I am not a programmer, who could implement it, but if there are some, feel free

Then you might try to go to your rdiff-backup-data directory of your backup and delete all but the latest current-mirror-*.data files. At least my backups (simple rdiff-backup) are working again.
